Patchcords and pigtails PM are designed for systems which needs polarization. They use special single mode fiber in which cladding is equipped with tension elements. As a result, the structure of the fiber core is unevenly stretched - in one axis tension is greater than the other, so that in the core propagates only polarized light in the tensioned axis. The polarized light is composed of two orthogonally located waves - electric and magnetic fields . They propagate slightly different speeds , if we are talking about fast or free axis depends on which of waves is introduced in the axis of core tension.

Propagation of polarized light increases the possibility of transmission, because the polarization phenomenon which introduce attenuation are decreasing. This allows to get the transmission of 40Gb/s and more in a single channel.
